The Slovak police have brought 35 charges for approving the assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok made the announcement at a press conference.

Police tackle cases hard and fast

The minister says the police deal with such cases hard and fast. So far, 11 cases have resulted in chargesheets. The penalty for approving such an act is five to 10 years behind bars. He denied that there was a cover-up in Handlová, as he himself saw blood on the square where Juraj Cintula attacked.

In one of the cases being handled by the police, he is believed to be a supporter of the opposition. A man with the initials J.K. claimed on his YouTube channel that the assassin had taken a bad hit and should have hit Fico in the forehead. He has already been charged and the case is believed to be from 1 October. Police officers found photographs of politicians in the man's home.

"I want to call on everyone to stop this kind of behaviour. The police are monitoring the behaviour in the online space as well and are assessing the level of potential risk and potential danger," Shutai Eshtok said at the press conference.

In the second case, the minister mentioned stand-up comedian from the group Silné reči Matej Makovický. He said during one appearance that "then again, it seems we can't shoot our own prime minister" and "like country, like Kennedy". However, in this case, according to the Minister of the Interior, the law was not broken, but it was a moral failure.

The Prime Minister was seriously shot by assailant Juraj Cintula after a cabinet meeting in Handlová on 15 May. He is being prosecuted for the particularly serious crime of terrorist attack. The attacker caused several serious injuries to Fico by shooting him at close range.
