A drone strike on Moscow left one dead and several injured. Airports suspended operations, buildings on fire
The air defence destroyed 337 Ukrainian drones in the night from Monday to Tuesday (11 March). Of these, 91 were targeting Moscow, the Russian defence ministry said. According to Reuters, this is apparently the largest air strike on the Russian capital in the entire war, with Russian state-run TASS news agency reporting the most extensive attack on Russia this year.
Massive drone attack
A massive drone attack on Moscow and the Moscow region claimed at least one victim and injured three on Tuesday night. According to the AFP news agency, the governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobiov, reported this on Tuesday (11 March).
Vorobiov added that the massive drone attack on Moscow and the Moscow Region began around 04:00 local time. The victim and wounded are reported from the town of Vidnoye and from the village of Yam near Domodedovo.
The governor specified that debris from the drone landed on an apartment building in the village of Ramenskoye, damaging at least seven apartments from the 19th to the 22nd floor. Twelve people, including three children, were evacuated from there. Some of the evacuees were placed in a nearby school, while the rest decided to stay with relatives.
In total, "more than 60 drones were shot down" over the Moscow region, Vorobiov reported. Other sources had earlier reported 69 drones shot down flying towards Moscow and the adjacent metropolitan area.
Damaged buildings and cancelled flights
Residents of Moscow and the Moscow region have been posting photos and videos of hit - damaged or burning - apartment buildings on social media since morning. These videos are also appearing on Ukrainian Telegram network channels, Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) noted.
Zhukovsky and Domodedovo airports in the Moscow metropolitan area have suspended operations due to the drone attack, the Russian air traffic control authority said.
In addition to Moscow, residents of the city of Ryazan in the central European part of Russia, where the military airport of Diaghilevo was reportedly attacked, also reported a drone strike.
Ryazan Region Governor Pavel Malkov wrote in a Telegram status that the drone strike was averted by air defence forces, so there were no casualties, no damage to residential buildings or social infrastructure facilities.
The Russians also attacked
Ukrainian air defences managed to shoot down a Russian Iskander-M missile overnight, as well as 79 out of 126 Russian drones. Another 35 drones failed to reach their targets, probably due to jamming by radio-electronic warfare assets. This was reported by the Ukrainian Air Force. A 40-year-old cyclist was injured in a Russian drone strike on Kherson in the southeast of the country, authorities there said.
The Russian attacks caused damage in the Donetsk, Odessa, Kharkiv, Sumy and Kiev regions, the air force said without further details.
