The accused pupil, who attacked the Spišská Stará Ves gymnasium with a knife last week, had threatened his female classmates via text message a few days before the attack. Police assessed the pupil's actions as bullying, not a criminal offence.
Branislav Zurian, director of the Office of Inspection Service (OIS), said this after Tuesday's meeting of the National Council Committee for Defence and Security, which was in classified mode.
According to Zurian, the police offered to be present at the school on the day of the student's scheduled examination, the day of the attack. The management did not agree to this.
"They said it would be counterproductive and asked for the police to be around when the board exam was," Zurian recounted, adding that the fact that the police were not around is the subject of an ISI investigation.
Police Vice President Rastislav Polakovič confirmed that there have been an increasing number of reports of pupils who have been inspired to carry out such attacks. "We are paying due attention to each case and we are dealing with all these things," Polakovic explained.
Tragedy with two dead
An assault at a gymnasium in Spišská Stará Ves on Thursday (16 January) left two women, aged 18 and 51, dead. They were a student and the school's deputy headmistress. Another female pupil was injured.
Police charged the suspect in the crime, an 18-year-old student from Ľubica who attended the gymnasium, with premeditated murder. She proposed custodial prosecution, a proposal that was also agreed by the prosecutor. The Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok took the accused student into custody.
In connection with the case, the ÚIS is conducting a criminal prosecution for the crime of obstruction of a public official.
