Since I survived, you decided to give it a try. Fico accused psychologists of abusing the profession against the government
The prime minister reacted sharply to the call of psychologists who urged him to self-reflect or resign. Fico accused them of abusing the profession for political purposes and described their call as a political appeal.
Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) addressed a sharp reaction to psychologists Anton Heretik and Jozef Hašt, who, along with other experts, called on the Prime Minister to self-reflect or resign from his post.
In a Facebook post, he accused them of abusing the profession for political purposes.
Abuse of the profession
Fico described the letter as a "political appeal" motivated by their long-standing opposition to the government. "One thing is your personal opinion, the other, much more serious, is that you are grossly abusing your profession for political purposes," the prime minister wrote.
In his response, he also touched on the way in which the authors of the appeal had communicated. "The enormous number of titles before and after the names you have collected to call on me to leave politics only causes disrespect and concern," said Fico, who at the same time accused the experts of supporting undemocratic practices and attacks on his person and government policy.
I survived it, now you're trying it
According to the prime minister, the appeal follows a series of attempts by the opposition and its supporters to weaken his position. He mentioned the discrediting of political leaders, the abuse of criminal law and the attempt to physically eliminate him, which he attributed to opposition activists.
"Since I am a survivor, you politically committed psychiatrists and psychologists decided to try it," Fico said.
The prime minister also expressed his belief that experts support the opposition's efforts to destabilise the government. However, according to him, a change of government can only come on the basis of the results of the parliamentary elections, not "pseudo-medical pamphlets".
Finally, Fico announced that he would inform international professional associations and organisations about the activities of the experts concerned.
Zareagoval aj Taraba
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment Tomáš Taraba also responds to the psychiatrists who sent a letter to Robert Fico.
In a Facebook post, he said that sometimes the difference between a psychiatrist and a patient is only that "the psychiatrist has the keys to the facility".
Taraba claims that the letter violated any ethical and professional honour and suggested that they may have committed a criminal offence.
"To give someone a diagnosis without examining them and still make it public is an assault on personal dignity. These people should lose their professional competence immediately," he wrote.
Open letter from the experts
More than a hundred mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and psychologists, have called on the Prime Minister to self-reflect and consider leaving politics.
In an open letter, they expressed concern about the negative impact of his behaviour on Slovak society and democracy.
They criticised his aggressive style, his spreading of conspiracy theories and his contempt for his opponents, which, they said, increases the frustration of citizens and encourages people to leave Slovakia.
The letter also draws attention to the normalisation of violence in politics and its dangerous consequences for the country.
