Hlas-SD rejects any discussion of Slovakia's possible withdrawal from the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

It reacted to the words of the deputy chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic for Smer-SD, Tibor Gašpar, who on Friday (17 January) admitted the possibility of withdrawing from both communities as an extreme solution.

Hlas-SD rejects any discussion

"Hlas-SD advocates a sovereign foreign policy in which Slovak interests must come first. However, we reject any discussion about Slovakia's possible withdrawal from the EU or NATO," said party spokeswoman Michaela Eliášová.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also reacted to Gašpar's words. On his social network, he posted a quote from the September 2024 memorandum of the highest constitutional officials, in which they declared their support for Slovakia's unquestionable membership in the EU and NATO.

Gašpar commented on the proposal of the opposition SaS party to enshrine Slovakia's membership in the EU and NATO in the constitution. The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament reminded that Slovakia joined both communities on the basis of a referendum and the same rule should also apply to a possible withdrawal, which he described as an extreme solution. At the same time, he said that Smer-SD does not have as a priority and goal at the moment to withdraw from the EU or NATO.

"But both of these associations are evolving over time. They may be changing some of the basic issues or principles of functioning that were in place at the time we joined them. Therefore, there must remain an open door for the situation that we would eventually consider an extreme solution, such as leaving the EU," Gašpar said.
