OnlyFans says it screens every user and all content to prevent children from accessing its pornography-focused platform. But a Reuters investigation into US police and court files revealed complaints that hundreds of sexually explicit videos and images of minors - from toddlers to teenagers - appeared on the website.
The original idea of the portal
The OnlyFans platform was initially intended to serve only artists and influencers.
For example, rapper Cardi B adds interesting private facts to her profile and Lily Mercer gives advice to musicians. Jane Kim Fitness writes about how to train your physique and drag queen Shea Couleé shares makeup tips.
However, these are only a minority of creators who don't create sexual content. In fact, the platform has allowed adult content, which has started to gain popularity especially in 2020.
The pandemic brought the entire pornography industry to a halt for many months, and so a number of porn actors and actresses moved to OnlyFans.
Even Czech porn actress Daisy Lee created an account on the platform during the lockdown.
"I didn't really believe it. Even though it doesn't seem like it, there's a lot of work involved and it can really make good money. I don't even believe it can make that kind of money. I expect that any day now they might cancel it because it's almost unrealistic that a person can earn an amount of money in a month that they can even buy a car," she said in an interview with brainee.hnonline.sk.
Kidnapped girl found with unknown man
When a 16-year-old Florida girl went missing in April 2023, her parents desperately searched her phone for clues. What they found shocked them. For months, she had been sending nude photos and videos of herself to a man they thought had kidnapped her.
"Some guy just flew in from New Jersey," her bewildered father told a 911 dispatcher after reading her messages. "There's some sexual stuff and explicit photos... Something that bad," he added.
According to police records, the next day sheriff's deputies found the girl partially naked in a rented home with a man. The investigation revealed that on OnlyFans, a thriving online marketplace for homemade porn, the man had posted dozens of sexual videos and images of the girl.
One of the videos, advertised for $20, showed him having intercourse with the girl.
"Look how wild I am," the description read. The man, 22-year-old Ethan Diaz, was later charged with human trafficking and other crimes.
He pleaded not guilty, Reuters reports.
He started by lying
The girl first posted nude photos of herself on Snapchat. Diaz messaged her in February 2023, posing as a woman who supposedly made a lot of money selling such photos with the help of a friend.
Diaz later introduced himself as her boyfriend and messaged the girl under his own name. He thus gained her trust. He bought her a cell phone and told her she was beautiful, St. Johns County Sheriff's Detective Edward Scoggins, who investigated the case, describes the predator's actions.
Soon Diaz said he loved her and wanted to be with her forever.
Such tactics are often used by"Romeo pimps," who "bombard women and girls with love" and gifts to"manipulate someone into doing things they wouldn't do otherwise," Scoggins said.
Shooting videos and selling on OnlyFans
Diaz lured the girl into filming sex toy videos and then sold them on an OnlyFans account he managed, police say.
The girl also allegedly posted sexual content on her account under Diaz's direction.
Then, on April 30 last year, Diaz flew in from New Jersey to shoot homemade porn with her. Such videos were "more in demand" on OnlyFans.
He picked her up in a white Tesla and drove her to a rented space 15 minutes away from her house. He took her shopping and bought her lingerie, jewelry and shoes.
